Design the day: I DOS AND DON’TS

Do BOOK A WEDDING PLANNER We love Liz Linkleter – the ex-Alexander McQueen PR who oversaw Erdem’s nuptials – and the elegant events she curates (above). Then there’s GSP Events, the go-to for the fashion, film and art worlds, who recently produced an immersive four seasons wedding – exactly the kind of challenge that founder Emma Gold thrives on. Don’t SCRIMP ON THE MUSIC You get what you pay for, and it will make or break your party. Nothing clears a dancefloor like a cheap band. Far better to secure the DJ who packs out your local bar, or who hosts that NTS morning radio show you love. Vibe tip: make sure the smoking area, bar and dancefloor are all close to one another – a bar in another room is an instant…

M2 MACBOOK AIR REVIEW: APPLE’S EVERYDAY LAPTOP HAS ITS GOLDILOCKS MOMENT

So you’re ready to buy a new laptop. What do you need it for? What do you really need it for? It’s tempting to look at a top-of-the-line model, but most of us aren’t doing complex professional video edits on 4K video, heavy-duty scientific work, or really big coding projects every day. Most of us spend our time with some browser tabs open, a handful of apps for email and messaging, editing photos or maybe some simple videos, watching streaming video, that sort of thing. If you’re a gamer that wants to play the latest games, our sister site, PCWorld, can point you in the direction of a Windows laptop, but for everyone else—everyone who doesn’t use their laptop for very intensive tasks all day long—the MacBook Air is exactly what…

BACK TO THE FUTURE

BACK TO THE FUTURE

STEP 1 BUILD A NEW NEUE KLASSE Reaching for a comforting squeeze of the past while contemplating the seismic changes of the near future is nothing new in contemporary car making. But BMW is reaching and squeezing on a different scale to most. Where the likes of Honda and Renault looked back and drew inspiration for a couple of individual cars to create the cute E and the R5 (see page 86), BMW is looking to an entire generation of machines, the Neue Klasse of the ’60s and ’70s. Why? Because so much that made, and continues to make, BMW great (including the combustion engine) is going out of the window. After a bumpy start, Munich’s electrification starts here, in earnest. With the i3 and i8, BMW went electric early, got burned,…

IMADÉ NIBOKUM IMPACT Created Depressed While Black, an online community turned nonprofit that donates Black-affirming personal care items to psychiatric patients and helps people find Black therapists. Nibokum used to think depression was a “White person’s disease.” She says, “My mom raised us to believe that Black people are strong; we don’t get depression. And prayer is how we cope—not therapy or medication.” Then, in graduate school she had symptoms of severe depression and borderline personality disorder, with multiple suicide attempts. A therapist eventually helped her get better. This inspired her to create Depressed While Black, an online community and blog to share experiences through the Black lens and show that, yes, Black people can get depressed and deserve care, and connect them to Black mental health professionals. DWB is also a nonprofit…

As condições pareciam adequadas.

RESGATE NO LITORAL PAULISTA

RESGATE NO LITORAL PAULISTA

Bullitt with GT350 Wings

This year marks the return of the Mach 1 badge, which adorns the fenders of a new special-edition Mustang focused on lap times. Think of it as a replacement for the discontinued GT350, Bullitt, and GT Performance Package Level 2. Those cars provide many of the Mach 1’s track-focused parts, but don’t get your hopes up—the GT350’s 8250-rpm screamer isn’t among them. This Mach 1 has the Bullitt’s 480-hp 5.0-liter V-8, making it 20 horses stronger than the regular-grade GT. What the Mach 1 does get from the GT350 is a Tremec six-speed manual transmission (instead of the GT’s Getrag box). A track-ready suspension, complete with adaptive magnetorheological dampers, bolts to front and rear subframes borrowed from the GT350, while the GT’s Performance-package brake hardware—15.0-inch front rotors pinched by six-piston calipers—puts…

AS ALTITUDES DO VOO

AS ALTITUDES DO VOO

RECIPE DEVELOPER Ali Slagle was a self-proclaimed “never-breaster” who only tolerated chicken breasts when they were breaded and fried schnitzel style. Then she developed a method for crackly-skinned, juicy roast breasts that has quickly earned a spot in her regular rotation. Preheating the skillet before adding the chicken jump-starts the browning process; the bones provide a buffer that protects the meat from drying out as the skin gets golden. Use the leftover drippings to make any kind of side, from sautéed greens to warm salad dressing to the herby peas and croutons shown here. Clos Rougeard

Estabelecido no séc.

Declining software quality is just one of the many issues bugging Apple users

I love speaking at user group meetings. There aren’t as many Apple user groups out there as there used to be, and these days the meetings are mostly over Zoom, but as someone who mostly speaks with developers, PR people, and media types, it’s refreshing to speak to people who are much more purely enthusiastic about Apple and its platforms. User groups also tend to do a good job of exposing the concerns and pain points of Apple customers who aren’t doing this for a living. It’s a great perspective shift. Last month, I spoke to a group that made it pretty clear what Apple is doing that is making them unhappy. The particular complaints that floated to the top were, I think, instructive about where Apple needs to make changes…

Is SPF Makeup Enough?

WHAT IF I WORK FROM HOME? If you’re spending the day indoors (maybe getting nothing more than a little indirect light from your window), makeup with “broad-spectrum SPF” (label must say this) is better than nothing, says Orit Markowitz, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. “In fact, a recent study showed iron oxides, a mineral ingredient in a lot of makeup products, offer protection against blue light [emitted by phones, laptops, etc.].” But if you’re going outside, you need more protection. 1 start with a lotion The broad-spectrum sunscreen in your makeup would work solo if you used enough of it, but therein lies the problem. To get adequate protection, the rule of thumb for the face and neck is a nickel-size amount. “If you were to do that with makeup,…

Steve Jobs’ five most memorable Apple products (and one more thing)

Steve Jobs’ impact was so significant that it’s difficult to find the words to describe his influence on business, technology, and society, even 10 years after his death. It’s hard to narrow down the products released under his watch to a list of just five. But we tried anyway. Here’s our list of the most memorable products released during Steve Jobs’ tenure with Apple. Also note that Apple has posted a film, Celebrating Steve, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Jobs’ death. 1. APPLE II Everyone remembers the Mac (see item two on this list), but the Apple II was the first product that really got Apple going as a business. The first mass-produced computer by the company in 1977, the Apple II (pictured) succeeded the Apple I, which was not a…

Leaving Her Mark

Covering up a window, forgoing proper kitchen cabinetry, painting shutters to match the clapboard façades.… Such notions are, to the pearl-clutching decorati, anathema. But designer Michelle R. Smith has never been one to abide by convention. Case in point: the 1857 house that she recently transformed in Bellport, New York, a charm-filled village on the south shore of Long Island. Over a matter of weeks, this rising star updated the Greek Revival residence into an eclectic nest for her young family, cleverly challenging the rules of good taste along the way. The four-bedroom property, though historic, had languished on the market on account of its formal interiors and outdated systems. “There was no air-conditioning, no laundry room,” she recalls. “It seemed overwhelming to a lot of people, but I was like,…

Finding Their Light

ALEXANDRA GRAY BENNETT and her husband were ready to nest. Finally back together in their native Minnesota—after they married, he had moved to Boston for business school—the couple were looking for an ideal home to start a family in. “We were basically Trulia regulars,” jokes Bennett. “But I remember the first moment I saw our house in 2017. I just had a feeling.” Set in the leafy Kenwood neighborhood of South Minneapolis, the 2,300-square-foot, two-and-a-half-story 1920s cedar-shingle dwelling had a traditional foursquare design, with a room in each corner and a central hall and stairway. It ticked all their boxes: It was simple and beautiful, close to lakes and trails for their Labrador, and—the kicker—walking distance from one of the city’s best playgrounds. Two years and one positive pregnancy test later,…

NOT LONG AGO, HALLE BERRY APPEARED as a guest on Hot Ones, the viral YouTube talk show in which assorted celebrities (Billie Eilish, Charlize Theron, Shaq) agree to eat chicken wings of increasingly ungodly spice levels until they either quit, cry, or lose control of their fine motor skills. As she worked her way through a series of sauces with names like Chocolate Plague and Da’ Bomb Beyond Insanity, Berry came across as charming and funny and self-deprecating, talking easily about old Kanye lyrics and dog-training tips. But when the show’s host presented her with an endurance trophy at the finish line and asked whether there was anyone she’d like to thank, she turned unexpectedly blunt: “I’m gonna thank my damn self on this one,” she shook her head, half-delirious…

BUILD BETTER HABITS

Every morning when you get up you probably hit your alarm without thinking about it, roll out of bed, and grab your slippers and a robe. Maybe you walk into the kitchen and start making coffee before you’re even fully awake—hitting the light switch as you go without consciously deciding to turn on the light. These are your habits. “A habit is a choice you make at some point that you stop making and continue doing,” said Charles Duhigg, author of the book The Power of Habit. A habit is a behavior that becomes automatic, with little or no conscious thought. At some point, when you were learning to ride clip-in pedals, you had to think consciously about it every time you unclipped on the bike and tried to stop. You had to…

Miss Mills, as he was affectionately known to friends, was quite the anomaly during his reign as one of the biggest makeup artists of the 1970s and ‘80s. He never seemed to stop working during that period, racking up more than 1,600 major magazine covers. Those bushy brows and piercing eyes you see in Brooke Shields’s Calvin Klein Jeans ads were a Joey Mills special. So were the glossy lips and bronzed cheekbones of model Darnella Thomas when she appeared in Revlon’s Charlie ads in the 1970s. He painted the faces of Beverly…

Plant-based eating is experiencing a growth spurt. Almost one-third of Americans say they are actively trying to reduce their consumption of meat and dairy, according to the Plant Based Foods Association. Last year, 28 percent of people reported eating more protein from plant sources, 24 percent had more plant-based dairy, and 17 percent ate more plant-based meat alternatives than they did in 2019, a survey by the International Food Information Council found. Our desire for a more wellness-oriented lifestyle is fueling the trend. Health is the key reason 56 percent of people choose plant-based proteins, according to a 2020 report from the market research company Mintel, while environmental impact and animal welfare are the top concern for 26 percent, according to Mattson Consulting. “There’s been a lot of emerging science, as well…

And he’s mindful of how devoted you are, especially those who’ve asked him to autograph their kitchen knives. So yes, he feels your pain. “It was so confounding for people,” Hall, 50, says of the series ender, in which Dexter Morgan—forensic-blood-splatter analyst by day, vigilante serial killer, um, also by day—threw his dead sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), into the angry waters off Miami. “I can appreciate how it was pretty dissatisfying for anyone who was hoping for something definitive or some sense of closure,” the actor adds of Dexter faking his own death and moving to a…

Cars have always been my passion, and I am rediscovering that joy by building scale models of them. One of the automobiles that grabbed my attention is the Renault 4, so I was happy to build Heller’s 1/24 scale TL/GTL variant (No. 80759). The kit is simple and builds quickly. I added a few details but focused on finishing. I wanted to represent a slightly worn but not destroyed car. FINAL THOUGHTS I PAINTED THE INSIDE of the headlights with chrome circles highlighted with white in the center. The taillights and turn signals were painted with Mr. Hobby Clear Red (No. H90) and Clear Orange (No. H92). These lenses and other small details, including the bumpers, wing mirrors, and door handles were attached with Revell Contacta clear-part cement. I added the few…

Interior designer Jamie Krywicki Wilson says that for her family, the prompts come strongly from sand and surf. “I think the beach is probably the only place my husband and I actually feel relaxed,” she says. “It’s important for your home to make you feel that way.” Although her own home—a 1973 ranch house near Atlanta—is more than four hours’ drive from the Atlantic Ocean, the designer found her muse…

“The limited edition I created for Saucony Originals pays tribute to ornament, expressed in refined detailing, the hallmark of my brand. Coliac’s unique and irreverent approach blends with the craft skills and values of a historic brand like Saucony Originals. The partnership prompted me to create elegant and unique pieces.” This is how Coliac shoe designer Martina Grasselli describes her partnership with the sneaker brand Saucony Originals, achieved with the creative support of Vogue Talents. Jazz Court, the newest of the models presented in 2021 to enrich its already huge range, is inspired by the world of tennis. Grasselli has reinterpreted it by infusing it with Coliac’s typical eclecticism. In this way she created two versions, one white, the other black, studded with jewel settings, in shades of silver and…

Plaie d’argent…

IN THE GROOVES

in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, condo buyers are willing to pay a premium for terraces and gardens. That’s good news for Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu, designers of a new building in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn where every unit has at least two balconies and where front doors open onto shaded outdoor walkways. Despite prices in the millions, listings are nearly sold out, and the developer is working with Idenburg and Liu on two more buildings like it. Meanwhile, in another part of Brooklyn, a cluster of gallery buildings has become an architecture pilgrimage site just months after it opened. The East Williamsburg complex, called Amant, uses brick, concrete, and aluminum in surprising ways, creating textures that visitors—many of them architects—can’t resist touching. Some days the walls get…

Continuing the history of Pan American Airways in Central America (see Pan Am and the Battle for Central America, Airways, December 2021) Intense competition in the 1940s from TACA Airways and its regional subsidiaries forced Pan Am’s Juan Trippe to establish Pan American affiliates as a counter-offensive. Coincidentally, Honduran President Tiburcio Carias was just then beginning to lose confidence in TACA de Honduras’ flight schedule. TACA’s iconic owner, Lowell Yerex, had sold his controlling interest to TWA, which had re-focused the airline more internationally at the expense of local feeder lines. This angered President Carias, who relied upon TACA for the vital communication links to maintain his political influence throughout the remote and isolated regions of Honduras. By 1943, the President was determined to replace TACA in his country and asked the senior…

AS THEY CELEBRATE A MILESTONE OF MARRIED LIFE THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE CONTINUE THE WORK OF THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH ON THEIR FIRST ENGAGEMENT SINCE HIS FUNERAL

Ahead of their tenth wedding anniversary this week, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge paid a special visit to highlight the legacy of the Duke of Edinburgh. Four days after the funeral of Prince Philip, William and Kate met air cadets in East London and smiled as they raised their caps and gave three cheers in his memory. On the command: “Three cheers for His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh,” the cadets gave a rousing: “Hip, hip, hooray!” Although still in a period of royal mourning until the following day, the Queen gave the couple special permission to visit the 282 (East Ham) Squadron, Air Training Corps (ATC) in East London in honour of her husband, who served as Air Commodore-in-Chief of the ATC for 63 years. Philip handed over the reins to…

THE NEW VITAL SIGNS

NEW VITAL SIGN #1: HEART-RATE RECOVERY CAN TELL YOU ABOUT: HEART HEALTH Your body’s ability to ferry oxygen to your muscles during exercise—known as cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF)—is such a powerful predictor of how long you’ll live that the American Heart Association has suggested making it an official vital sign. The gold standard for measuring CRF is a VO2-max test (in an exercise lab or with a fancy watch). But there’s a way to estimate it easily and track its progress at home, says L.A.–based trainer Matt Berenc, C.S.C.S. TEST IT: Check your heart-rate recovery. The fitter and healthier your heart is, the more quickly it adapts to the demands of exercise and the faster it slows down when you’re done. So right after intense exercise, stop and check your heart rate. Check it again…

Psychology of stargazing

Psychology of stargazing

Glenn has been an avid observer since a friend showed him Saturn through a small backyard scope in 1963. This month, we’re going to step away from our usual observing content and instead take a look at the psychology of skygazing. In short, we’ll ruminate on what makes us backyard astronomers tick. Why do we prefer reading Astronomy to, say, Field & Stream, Better Homes and Gardens, or Popular Mechanics? What compels us go outside on a clear starlit evening and gaze heavenward while our neighbors are indoors watching TV or playing games? I used to think a proclivity for backyard astronomy had to do with a love of the outdoors. That might be because my three favorite activities are stargazing, fishing, and recreational running. All involve being out in open air,…

Muitas eram rebocadas…

Switzerland’s gift to the Giro

Switzerland’s gift to the Giro

You know a climb is special when even bike races in neighbouring countries want to feature its legsapping slopes and majestic views of snow-sprinkled peaks. Switzerland’s Croix de Coeur – an elegant Alpine pass in the southwest canton of Valais – is one that has caught the eye of Grand Tour organisers. The first section of the climb is a squiggling trail of tight hairpins that leads to the ski resort of Verbier at an altitude of 1,500m, and it served as the dramatic final ascent of the 207.5km Stage 15 of the 2009 Tour de France, won by a swashbuckling Alberto Contador. And this May the cloud-scraping Croix de Coeur itself, which looms 8km beyond Verbier at 2,174m, will light up the savage 207km Stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia. In…

How do I grow beautiful hydrangeas year after year? —Michelle Cannon, Red Hook, N.Y. Adored for their fluffy pom-pom flowers, these plants are nature’s cheerleaders, typically thriving throughout Zones 4 to 9. But the various types require unique care for lasting impact. To ensure that yours explode with beauty every summer, heed the advice of Ryan McEnaney, communications manager at Bailey’s Nursery, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a spokesperson for ‘Endless Summer’ hydrangeas, on snipping, soaking, and feeding them. 1. Know Your Variety Most hydrangeas fall into one of three categories: panicle (cone-shaped, like those shown), smooth (large and snowball-like), or bigleaf (bigger leaves—you guessed it—in tighter globes or more open, lacy petals). The first two bloom on new growth; the last erupts on both new and old (i.e., the prior year’s branches). 2. Prune…

BRAZIL

In the history of Brazilian exports, there may be no truer representation of the nation’s flavor than Anitta. She is not a supermodel, not a movie star, not a muse walking the sands of Ipanema. She is a girl from the favelas, who learned to sing in church, took courses in business administration, and rose to global fame on a wave of grit, determination, and some serious bass-thumping, ass-bumping music. Before Anitta appears for an interview I already know she is likely to be wearing a strapless ruched top and beachy, sun-kissed hair and that her backdrop will be, as the kids say, drippy. Because, like the other 52.1 million Instagram followers who watch her every move, I just saw the IG Story of Anitta, along with her dad and a…

After nearly half of Sweden’s population watched Marriage’s crumbling couple (Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson), divorce rates spiked to a record high. While the correlation is debatable, viewers did flock to Sweden’s marriage-guidance service. “[The Stockholm office] saw a huge increase in calls, and the waiting list went from three weeks to three months,” marvels Linda Haverty…

HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE MY FOX NEWS PARENTS

HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE MY FOX NEWS PARENTS

MANY PEOPLE I KNOW HAVE PARENTS WHO are suffering from Early Fox News Dementia, ranting about the perfidy of Anthony Fauci and the possibility of catching critical race theory from an open jar of mayonnaise. But at the same time, they want to give their children parental advice and guidance, though now through the prism of their separate bespoke realities. They want to remain parents, but only on their own racist and hurtful terms. My counsel to these children—stemming from what my closest friends and I experienced, all of us immigrants in our forties from different parts of the world—is to orphan yourself. A few years after graduating from college, I decided to do just that. Not to become an orphan per se, because my mother and father remained thankfully alive,…

Secrets of Great Flavor

Secrets of Great Flavor

“It’s not just about taste and aroma. Flavor also involves our emotions about food intertwined with our sense of its textures, colors, shapes, and sounds,” says Nik Sharma, the author of The Flavor Equation. “What we define as delicious is actually a combination of elements that come together in one extraordinary experience.” Turn the page for Sharma’s tips for building that full dynamic into your dishes. 5 building blocks of flavor UMAMI A special phenomenon occurs when two or more ingredients come together and produce a greater effect combined than they would have alone, Sharma says. That’s called umami synergism. To achieve it: > Combine seaweed like kombu or nori with shiitake mushrooms for a powerfully flavorful vegetarian broth. > Elevate the taste of garlic and onions by sautéing them with ginger, tomato paste, miso,…

LET’S BE HONEST: IF YOU’VE DONE A TRIATHLON (AND EVEN IF YOU HAVEN’T) you’ve probably heard of Ironman and Kona. It’s our Mt. Everest or our Boston Marathon—and it looms large. As you progress in the sport, it’s understandable for some athletes to be drawn to longer and longer distances. It’s also completely understandable if that’s not your goal and you’d rather go faster, or shorter, or try something new. As a coach, I view it as my job to guide and help athletes achieve their goals, whatever those are. I believe that if you want to make the jump from a sprint to the Olympic-, half-, or iron-distance, then you should. Most of us are in this sport because we’re looking to push ourselves and step outside what’s comfortable. Challenging…

O SURPREENDENTE A 320

Hawaii’s Big Island has been largely Lycra-free since 2019, but very soon we’ll be returning to the middle of the Pacific for the 44th edition of the Ironman World Championship. Everything has changed in the real world—yet the upper echelons of triathlon have both completely changed and somehow feel oddly familiar.

First Look: 2023 Ford Escape

Few vehicles sharing the same basic platform are better differentiated than the boxy, go-anywhere Bronco Sport and the urban-outfitted, lozenge-shaped Escape. Had these C2 platform-mates looked more similar, the former might have cannibalized the latter’s sales. Both are selling at or near capacity three years into the fourth-gen Escape’s model run, but Ford has toughened up softer-looking Escape’s visage and demeanor anyway. Most of the redesign comes courtesy of a bolder new hood, which sits atop a more deeply sculpted grille flanked by a pair of LED-outlined “four-eyed” headlamps. On upper trim levels, a so-called “coast-to-coast” LED light strip connects these headlamp DRLs, illuminating the gap between the hood and grille. A new fascia incorporating a faux skidplate completes the makeover. Other exterior changes are minimal: new 17-, 18-, and 19-inch…

A famous beauty spot since the 19th century, the glacial fjord Carlingford Lough cuts deep into the eastern coast of Ireland midway between Belfast and Dublin, marking the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic. At its inner end is the village of Omeath. Here, overlooking the lough and the cloud-swept Mountains of Mourne, is what looks like a simple woodplanked fisherman’s shack. Step inside, though, and you enter an entirely different world. For this is the home away from home of Ciaran McGuigan, creative director of Irish furniture company Orior, and his American wife, Logann. “I just love the space here,” McGuigan says, “the energy you get from walking out of the door, being right on the waterfront and seeing that amazing view.” It’s a view he grew up with…

Ainda assim, a força aérea ucraniana, com poucos recursos e o país sob ataque, conseguiu realizar algumas surtidas contra tropas e aeronaves russas. A surpresa foi tamanha que diversos…

TEARS FOR FEARS BUILD SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR

Roland Orzabal: Our first band Graduate [formed in Bath in 1978] was an adolescent attempt to be fashionable, playing Mod powerpop. We loved 2 Tone and The Jam, but my songwriting hadn’t developed enough. Adjacent to this was the inspiration for the name Tears For Fears, namely Arthur Janov, a Californian psychologist famous for primal scream theory, which John Lennon did for six months. Curt Smith: Roland and I both came from broken homes, raised by our mothers. The rest of Graduate didn’t share our inner demons, and the idea of writing with the depth we were now talking about was alien to them. RO: There was a massive shift in pop: Gary Numan was Number 1, that was literally a Copernican inversion. [In 1981] we met Ian Stanley who owned a…

Fewer than 100 people a day are permitted to trek into the mountain gorilla habitat in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. But for those who do, “it’s the most life-changing experience,” says Ellen DeGeneres, who first visited the region in 2015. Visitors aren’t allowed to approach the animals, but a silverback (mature male) once bumped into her sister-in-law by accident. “I was so jealous,” DeGeneres recalls. “It’s thrilling to be that close to them but knowing they don’t want to hurt you.” Now a 60th-birthday present from her wife, Portia de Rossi, has helped underwrite what is known as the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund: a 12-acre complex dedicated to gorilla conservation. It is named for both the TV star and her idol, the self-taught naturalist, who may…

In an experiment that yielded insights into memory and the brain, a team of researchers at the University of Southern California taught the tiny creature to associate a bright light with a flash of heat, a temperature change the fish responded to by trying to swim away. Using a custom-designed microscope, the team then captured images of the animals’ brains in the moments before and after they learned to associate the light and the heat. It’s the first known look at how a living vertebrate’s brain restructures itself as the animal forms a memory. In the image published with…

THE ROYAL ROMANCE

THE ROYAL ROMANCE

Prince William had no shortage of female admirers when he began his studies at the University of St Andrews in 2001, but there was one striking, quietly confident, green-eyed brunette who had a certain magnetism. “When I first met Kate I knew there was something very special about her,” he has said. It was hard not to notice Kate – by the end of her first week, she had been named the prettiest girl at Sally’s, the nickname for St Salvator’s, the hall of residence in which they were both staying. But as Kate and the young Prince exchanged shy smiles when they passed on the stairs in their early days, neither could have known it was the beginning of a love story that would capture the world’s imagination. The Cambridges’ relationship, which started…

The 15-inch MacBook Air will be the perfect mix of portability, price, and performance

Rumors picked up again recently that a new 15-inch MacBook Air will be Apple’s next major Mac release, possibly at the Worldwide Developers conference, according to Mark Gurman’s latest report. But whether we get it before, during, or after WWDC, this much is true: It will instantly become Apple’s perfect laptop. That may seem like a stretch, but hear me out. Assuming the rumors and our own assumptions are true, the 15-inch MacBook Air will be the ideal laptop for nearly every user, with its combination of size, processing power, and value. The MacBook Air is already Apple’s most popular laptop, and a 15-inch model would be the jewel of the lineup. Here’s why. THE RIGHT SIZE Apple offers MacBooks in four different sizes: 13.3 inches (13-inch MacBook Pro), 13.6 inches (M2 MacBook…

All electric, totally 911

The Porsche 911 will go electric – in two giant leaps. We unveil Porsche’s plan to save its defining model. First we’ll see the hybrid 911, the 994, then the full-electric 998-gen car before the end of the decade. Porsche’s plan for the 911’s electrification is a bold transformation strategy – with plenty of imponderables. Like which type of battery to use, how to package it, and what shape to choose for minimum drag with maximum 911-ness. This story is a work in progress – progress that began in the last decade. While we tapped a variety of sources to shed light on the means and the end, a lot can change between now and 2028. But the wheels are in motion – as they must be. As Michael Steiner, Porsche’s R&D…

THINK UFOS ARE SPACE ALIENS? THINK WEIRDER

On a white restaurant tablecloth in San Francisco, under the glow of a stained-glass dome ceiling with images of laurels, fleurde-lis, and a ship, rested a portion of metal the size of a shallot. Around it one day in the summer of 2018, three men were having lunch. Jacques Vallée, a French information scientist, was explaining to Max Platzer, editor of a top aeronautics journal, how the metal had come into his possession. The story wound back more than four decades, he said serenely, to an unexplained episode in Council Bluffs, Iowa. On a cold Saturday night in late 1977, fire-fighters and police had responded to calls about a roundish, reddish object with blinking lights that hovered above the treetops in a public park, then dumped a bright mass onto the…

ESPERA WINES

Rodrigo Martins equacionou fazer do trompete vida profissional.

NO TIME TO DIE

SEAN CONNERY The first reference to a specific Bond watch was made in Ian Fleming’s second book, Live and Let Die, in 1954. It was a Rolex. Fleming himself also wore one, more specifically an Explorer I. So it was no surprise when Sean Connery sported a Rolex in the very first Bond film Dr No, an early Submariner 6538, also known as the ‘Big Crown’ due to its very prominent winding crown. First produced by the company in 1955, and only manufactured for four years, this watch has become known as the James Bond Submariner. The highly collectable 6538 was also worn by Connery in From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. Good condition examples of this limited edition watch have sold for over £400,000 at auction. GEORGE LAZENBY Following on from the…

EX-FACEBOOK MANAGER CRITICIZES COMPANY, URGES MORE OVERSIGHT

While accusing the giant social network of pursuing profits over safety, a former Facebook data scientist told Congress Tuesday she believes stricter government oversight could alleviate the dangers the company poses, from harming children to inciting political violence to fueling misinformation. Frances Haugen, testifying to the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, presented a wide-ranging condemnation of Facebook. She accused the company of failing to make changes to Instagram after internal research showed apparent harm to some teens and being dishonest in its public fight against hate and misinformation. Haugen’s accusations were buttressed by tens of thousands of pages of internal research documents she secretly copied before leaving her job in the company’s civic integrity unit. But she also offered thoughtful ideas about how Facebook’s social media platforms could be made safer.…

The Ultimate Flavor Makers

The Ultimate Flavor Makers

“THE WAY FOOD FEELS IN your mouth plays an important role in how flavorful and enjoyable it is,” says Molly Baz, the author of Cook This Book. “So a key part of selecting ingredients for your dish involves thinking about what textures they’ll bring.” Reach for flavorful crunch from things like nuts, seeds, and croutons, she says. And for balance, add silkiness with a dollop of yogurt or a swirl of tahini. Turn the page to learn Baz’s techniques to make your meals more delicious and satisfying—and healthier too. Give It Some Bite “More often than not, dishes are lacking a super-crunchy texture that I call crispy crunchy,” Baz says. This texture is cooked separately from the main dish, which is why it often goes overlooked. Three of her quick and easy…

THE BEST OF 2021

TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR LUCY CHARLES-BARCLAY While the three-time Kona runner-up finally took home her first world title this year, it wasn’t just a wire-to-wire win in St. George that made her the athlete of the year. It was her uniquely 2021 approach—jumping into everything from the British Olympic Swim Trials to Super League races to the London Marathon. In June, the battle-braided Brit also made a surprise draft-legal debut at the World Triathlon Championship Series race in Leeds, finishing fifth in a field packed with short-course talent (with just 11 days notice that she’d be on the start line). That followed her second place at the British Olympic swimming trials in the 1500m (clocking 16:46.26) and a winter full of domination in the Zwift Pro Tri Series. She then took that…

Were you surprised by the reaction to Agatha? / I was excited to take a swing into this genre, but I had never done anything on this scale before. I have no social media, so I had no idea what was happening, except all of a sudden I would get these emails or texts from friends, and then it started to become clear to me that this was a big deal. It really tickled me that it landed the way it did. There was something that made people feel really nostalgic about sitting around the television once a…

Give Me Water Pressure or Give Me Death

DONALD TRUMP WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE SHOWERHEADS. Well, in one respect, anyway. There is something singularly demoralizing about bad water pressure, and one of the purest joys in this world is having a rinse under a powerful spigot. But this minor creature comfort in the vast sea of life’s indignities requires water, which the human race is consuming an awful lot of these days, so we citizens must do our part to conserve what remains. That’s why, in 1992, the Department of Energy limited how much water American showerheads can splash out to 2.5 gallons a minute. In 2013, amid a proliferation of multiple-showerhead fixtures, the Obama administration updated the rule: The limit would now apply to the total output of all nozzles combined. A few years later, though, Trump…

NEOPRENE KNOWLEDGE

WAY BACK IN THE DAY (YES, IN THE ANCIENT TIMES OF THE 1980S), triathletes had either no options for wetsuits, or they were stuck with a surf wetsuit that might keep them warm but was also nearly impossible to get off and incredibly inflexible. In the mid to late ‘80s, the first swim-specific wetsuits were designed, and since then triathletes have had increasingly better choices when it comes to shape, features, price points, buoyancy profiles, thickness, and materials. Today we have wetsuits as cheap as a pair of running shoes, and we have wetsuits as expensive as a new laptop. Let’s break down where you should start looking when it’s time to invest in some rubber. THE FIT Much like a bike, nothing else matters if a wetsuit doesn’t fit you well.…

Last year, Barbie Ferreira thought that life as we knew it was ending. So she did as any 20-something with a rebellious streak and a sense of urgency would do: She got a tattoo. “I have a spiral on my butt, because I was spiraling,” she says. “I was like, ‘Fuck it. I can’t die and not have tattoos.’” Of course, the world didn’t end. But the sudden change in its pace was a jolt for the 24 year old. “It was just weird to come off of something that changed my life and the very next year, boom, nothing,” she says. That something, being Euphoria, is the HBO hit that follows a group of teens as they navigate sex, love, identity, addiction, and trauma. The hour-long episodes evoke both sympathy and…

LA DOLCE VITA

Roots feel so essential in the world now—even more than ever after the pandemic,” Martina Mondadori says, standing on the landing of her new flat in Milan alongside her partner, Ashley Hicks. Mondadori relocated from London to Milan with her three children, Leonardo, Tancredi, and Cosima, in order to be closer to her mother, Paola Zanussi, and to connect the children with their Italian heritage. The choice would prove prescient on several levels, as the move occurred just before the world shut down. Mondadori, founder of the tastemaking lifestyle brand and magazine Cabana and a scion of Italy’s influential Mondadori and Zanussi families, and Hicks, a decorator, artist, and the son of legendary designer David Hicks, decided to make the design of the flat a complete collaboration. Each brought a powerful,…
