YOUNG AND RESTLESS Sharon’s Mysterious Gift At Crimson Lights, Sharon shows Nick a bottle of champagne that was delivered to her with the unsigned message, “Memories are what life is made of.” Nick takes a closer look and points out something interesting. “When Sharon received the champagne, she was too preoccupied with figuring out who sent it that she didn’t notice a stain on the label,” explains Executive Producer/Head Writer Josh Griffith. “Sharon is startled when Nick mentions the stain looks like blood, as it only intensifies the mystery of this random delivery.” Nick admits he’s not a forensic expert, so the stain is probably not really blood. He surmises that it could be a red wine stain from the store it came from. However, when Sharon examines it more closely, she doesn’t…

OUTDOOR LIVING TRENDS

01 MEDITERRANEAN MOOD Bring a touch of Mediterranean style to the patio. Spaces for lounging and dining are a must and are enhanced by natural materials and the colours of the Riveria – the azure coastline of Èze, the ochre of Provence, the terracotta of Sorrento. Essential elements include herringbone bricks in soft shades like aged clay; sand-coloured micro-pebbles in the garden; and outdoor tableware in vibrant patterns. 02 LIVE THE GOOD LIFE…OUTSIDE Designing outdoor living areas in similar ways to indoor spaces isn’t a new trend, but it’s intensifying this year. Look for tech products made for outdoors, such as movie screens and speakers. As well, the line between indoor and outdoor furniture is blurring even further now, with comfort and indoor styling driving the design of outdoor collections. 03 SUMMER OF COLOUR Make…

GATHERING PLACE

To have a lakefront cottage to share with their grown family is a dream come true for these homeowners,” says designer Stephanie Brown. “They’ve been yearning for this for years, and they came to the project ready to share their ideas.” Stephanie took it from there, opening the floor plan to optimize the water and vineyard views, and using salvaged fir to design rustic ceiling beams that look like they’ve been there forever. “We also lined the home in painted shiplap, and everywhere, we added layers of breezy linen and oversized furniture that’s approachable and relaxed,” says the designer. “When you walk in, you instantly decompress.” Open for Viewing Glass walls in the living room open to the outdoors. Early review of Intel 11th-gen Rocket Lake gives the chip mixed marks

Early review of Intel 11th-gen Rocket Lake gives the chip mixed marks

Intel’s 11th-gen Rocket Lake chip won’t hit shelves until the end of March, but an unexpectedly early review of a retail Core i7-11700K labels the chip as power-hungry and unable to surpass AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X in many tests. The review, written by respected CPU expert Dr. Ian Cutress of Anandtech.com, was based on a Core i7-11700K that is presumably one of the hundreds of CPUs accidentally sold a month before launch by a German retailer. Benchmarks of the chip have been making the rounds ever since, but Cutress is the first experienced journalist to publish a review. Cutress stepped carefully in his story, avoiding mention of any information he had already been given by Intel under embargo during regular briefings for the chip. He said he informed Intel that he had the…

1. This first question is going back to when Sharon first found out that Nick had slept with Grace… “Isn’t that when Sharon went to Denver?” Hold the phone! The question was going to be, “In what city did Sharon get hit by a car?” and you just answered that. So, you’re correct! 2. True or false: When Nick and Sharon owned Crimson Lights coffeehouse, they also opened a second location in Madison. “False! It was Milwaukee.” Correct. 3. Who was Sharon with when she found the corpse of Frank Barritt (Cassie and Mariah’s bio dad) in the sewer in 2004? “Well, there were a couple of people involved in that. Larry Warton had moved what she thought was Cameron’s body to the sewer and when he took Sharon down there to show her, Nikki came with them.…

THE EV1: Forget the Trash Talk

THE EV1: Forget the Trash Talk

General Motors takes way more flak and gets nowhere near enough credit for the GM EV1, the most technologically advanced production vehicle of its time. It pioneered and/or demonstrated myriad features we either take for granted on today’s (electric and gas) cars or still regard as futuristic. And it’s worth remembering the first EV1 was built in 1996, just as another all-aluminum two-seater was rolling out: the Lotus Elise. Notably, that car’s rolling chassis would underpin the Tesla Roadster in 2008. Let’s review some of the EV1’s many innovations. A 137-hp, 110-lb-ft AC induction motor spun the front wheels via a single-speed transaxle. Tesla began with AC induction motors, and there’s been a move toward this motor type as the secondary motor in all-wheel-drive electric vehicles because it presents no drag…

Allez, Allez! NASCAR Takes On Le Mans

→ Break out your American-flag shirt and grab your passport, because NASCAR is headed to France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The crossover isn’t as strange as it might seem. American sports-car teams have long been vying for glory on the Mulsanne Straight at the famed endurance race, but NASCAR has only been to Le Mans once before. Each year, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) welcomes a team to Le Mans to participate in the Garage 56 program, an exhibition class created in 2012 to encourage technical innovation. Past G56 racers have run on alternative fuels or featured cockpits equipped for disabled drivers, with two teams from the latter category being the only G56 entries to have ever finished the race. For 2023, the ACO invited NASCAR to…

How to find and remove startup and login items on your Mac

When you turn on your Mac, various apps, add-ons, and invisible background processes start running all by themselves. This is usually what you want, but you may sometimes see items running that you don’t recall adding yourself. Where do they come from? Sometimes these processes and apps can cause problems, and you need to remove them for your Mac to behave normally. And even if there’s not a problem, such items can increase your Mac’s startup time and may decrease performance, you’ll want to make sure your Mac is loading only items that are useful to you. Here’s a quick primer on the various kinds of startup and login items and how to manage them. LOGIN ITEMS MacOS 13 (Venutra) or later: Open System Settings and click General, then click Login Items (1). You’ll…

WHAT’S AN ORIGINAL-OWNER SATURN LIKE TO DRIVE?

Kudos to Saturn: Those plastic body panels really do work. The pristine S-Series you see here—a time machine of a car if there ever was one—resides not in rust-free Arizona or California but in the heart of Chicago. Twenty-seven years ago, Barbara Schreiber custom-ordered this bright red SC2, attracted not only to the coupe’s Coke-bottle planform and pop-up headlights but also to Saturn’s new way of doing business. She used the car sparingly as her primary driver for 16 years, and if the roads aren’t too snowy or salty, she still exercises it weekly. With just 61,000 miles on the clock, her first-gen Saturn’s finish still glistens. The interior is showroom fresh thanks to seat covers and rubber floormats she bought the day after she took delivery. Everything except the alternator,…

‘STRICTLY’ STARS THE BOYS ARE BACK IN LONDON TOWN News that theatres are finally beginning to open their doors once more was greeted by a chorus of approval from Strictly Come Dancing stars last week, as Janette Manrara led a roll call of the show’s finest turning out to support their colleagues in Here Come the Boys in London’s West End. The show, which kicked off a ten-performance run, reunites Strictly professionals (above, from left) Graziano di Prima, Pasha Kovalev, Aljaz Skorjanec and Nadiya Bychkova with their former colleague Robin Windsor and TV presenter Karim Zeroual, who reached the final of the BBC series in 2019. America’s plan for the 21st century

IN THE 1940s and early 1950s America built a new world order out of the chaos of war. For all its shortcomings, it kept the peace between superpowers and underpinned decades of growth that lifted billions out of poverty. Today that order, based on global rules, free markets and an American promise to uphold both, is fraying. Toxic partisanship at home has corroded confidence in America’s government. The financial crisis of 2007-09 dented faith in markets. America’s failures in Iraq and Afghanistan undermined its claim to spread democracy. Today most countries refuse to heed its call to enforce sanctions on Russia. And China’s rise has spurred American politicians to take a more selfish, zero-sum approach to geopolitics. China’s rise has also increased the threat of war. In a conversation with The…

Rough Towels! Stinky Drains!

Rough Towels! Stinky Drains!

“My Towels Lose Their Softness and Fluffiness Over Time!” JANIE, NEW YORK CITY Blame these culprits: detergent, bleach, and fabric softener. You shouldn’t be using fabric softener at all with towels, says Patric Richardson, author of Laundry Love. It tends to leave behind a coating that can mess with texture and limit absorption. Bleach can also degrade the quality of your towels. “It’s so rough on fabric. It’s basically sandpaper!” Richardson says. And if you’re using too much detergent—you only need one to two tablespoons for a full load—it won’t rinse out and can start to build up. To remedy your seemingly ruined towels, Richardson suggests just washing them with that prescribed amount of detergent. After three or four cycles, any buildup will naturally slough off, allowing for the return of the fluff.…

Photographer Alexi Lubomirski: An Eye for Beauty

For Alexi Lubomirski, shooting high-wattage celebrities is one part talk therapy, one part first date. “You want to make sure they’re comfortable and being listened to,” says the 47-year-old photographer, who has snapped A-listers for People, Vogue, Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar and brands like Dior and Louis Vuitton. “It’s understanding all their desires and insecurities and how they want to be portrayed. Hopefully, by the end of the day, you’re both having a wonderful time.” Born in London and raised in England and Botswana, Lubomirski discovered his passion for photography at age 11 and spent his early days learning the industry as an assistant to the legendary fashion photographer Mario Testino. His unique ability to disarm and energize subjects has helped him thrive in what he calls a “fickle business”—and that…

Go Nuts Over Storage That’s Simply Riveting

Go Nuts Over Storage That’s Simply Riveting

I was never fond of using pegboard for storage because the hooks were always falling out when I removed a tool. My toolbox cart has three pegboard panels that were going unused. Then I thought of rivet nuts. Rivet nuts, sometimes called rivnuts, install like a rivet using an inexpensive tool. Internal threads in the rivets make them an ideal solution for mounting custom tool racks to pegboard. I found that metric M4×0.7 rivnuts are perfectly sized for standard pegboard. To mount custom tool racks made from ¾"-thick material, M4×0.7×30 machine screws are ideal. Rivnuts provide a secure and flexible option for storing tools and accessories. Seriously? Yes

A GLITCH-PLAGUED chat with Elon Musk, live on Twitter, is an unconventional way to launch a presidential campaign. But with the entry of Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis (see Lexington), the race for the Republican nomination is now properly under way. The first states will not vote until January. Primaries are hard to predict, because it is expensive to conduct enough high-quality polls of primary voters in the key states. But, with that disclaimer over, one candidate has a huge, perhaps insurmountable, lead: Donald Trump. Mr Trump thus has a real chance of becoming America’s next president. Betting markets put his odds of returning to the White House at one in three. If you decided to pay less attention to Mr Trump after he lost in 2020, to preserve your sanity, you…

PS Audio PerfectWave DirectStream MK2

When Art Dudley reviewed the original PS Audio PerfectWave DirectStream D/A processor in Stereophile’s September 2014 issue, he very much liked what he heard. “For those who’ve waited for a computer-friendly DAC that offers, with every type of music file, the best musicality of which DSD is capable, the PerfectWave DirectStream may be in a class by itself,” he concluded. It was computer-friendly because, with an add-in card, you could connect it with USB or to an Ethernet cable and use it with, for example, Roon or JRiver. DSD? The DirectStream’s D/A conversion engine, designed by former Microsoft engineer Ted Smith, was unusual in that it synchronously upsampled all input data—regardless of format and native sample rate—to a 30-bit word length running at 28.224MHz followed by a digital-domain volume control. Marlena has a small handful of fierce qualities that are loyalty, compassion, understanding, patience and generosity, which is exactly what you want in a friend, a mom, a therapist, a neighbor. She’s there, she just shows up. Digest: What don’t you like about Marlena? Hall: That she is so even. I don’t really get to play the extreme highs and lows of a situation. ARIZONA COYOTES

SINCE BILL ARMSTRONG took the GM job in September 2020, he’s undertaken a full-blown teardown rebuild in Arizona, acquiring young players and assets to comprise the Coyotes’ future. And he’s been willing to take on bad contracts from cap-strapped teams to help replenish the cupboard. Arizona has been a regular at the top of the draft board in recent years. That run started by picking right winger Clayton Keller at No. 7 in 2016. Other recent top-10 picks have been center Barrett Hayton (fifth overall in 2018), right winger Dylan Guenther (ninth in ’21) and center Logan Cooley (third in ’22). B+ | RANK: 10TH 1. Dans l’ascenseur avec… Corneille

How to turn on Lockdown Mode and protect your iPhone from a rare cyberattack

Apple takes seriously the threat of targeted malware that hits its devices and extracts personal data from journalists, human-rights activists, opposition politicians, and others in the cross-hairs of repressive governments, criminal rings, and even spies for hire. Beyond suing companies in 2021 that Apple maintains produce “sophisticated, state-sponsored surveillance technology that allows its highly targeted spyware to surveil its victims,” and underwriting organizations countering cyber surveillance, Apple added a new high-security option to iOS 16 called Lockdown Mode. You’ll also find Lockdown Mode in iPadOS 16.1 when it ships (expected in October 2022) and macOS 13 Ventura (due out later this year). The vast majority of people don’t need to use Lockdown Mode, as it is designed to protect against tailored and targeted attacks that rely on delivering payloads via Messages…

(1982-2022) Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss: ‘He Was Pure Love & Light’

On Dec. 11 Stephen “tWitch” Boss and his wife, Allison Holker, were getting into the Christmas spirit, clad in cozy winter wear in front of a decorated tree, performing a “Holiday Sunday Funday Dance” on Instagram set to “December Back 2 June” by Alicia Keys. “To see them dance together is pure magic,” says a close friend of the pro dancers, who met on the set of So You Think You Can Dance in 2010 and are parents to Weslie, 14, Maddox, 6, and Zaia, 3. “There is so much love in that family.” Just two days later Boss, who was also the resident DJ and frequent cohost of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, died by suicide at 40 years old, leaving friends, family and fans heartbroken and trying to understand how…

Accepting a tribute at the Gotham Awards in NYC Nov. 28, the 42-year-old harkened back to her TV roots, playing Jen Lindley on late-’90s hit Dawson’s Creek, thanking her onscreen “Grams,” Mary Beth Peil, for mentoring and encouraging her. “I was an emancipated minor when we met,” the four-time Oscar nominee told the crowd (including Dawson’s alum and BFF Busy Philipps) at the swanky Cipriani Wall Street. “I was 16 years old, and I was totally alone.” She’s not alone anymore. The Woman Who Disturbs

I first learned about Michèle Mouton when I was in my early 20s, just about the same age she was when she first got in a race car in 1973, the inaugural year of the World Rally Championship. The race was the famously difficult Monte Carlo Rally, and Mouton was navigating for a friend. She said she had no idea what she was getting into: “When he first asked me if I wanted to co-drive for a rally, I said, ‘What’s rally?’” I was working at a motorcycle shop and had also never heard of rally racing. One of the mechanics told me I looked like “that French lady driver.” I didn’t, but I did wear my dark hair in long braids and had a habit of glaring at people—so, close…

GIANNI CREA IS intimately familiar with the contours of history. Almost every morning for the past decade, he’s unlocked the doors to the Vatican Museums. He’s witnessed the splendor of the Sistine Chapel at dawn, studied the shadows of Caravaggio, and admired the textures of ancient Egypt. “Yes, I’m a key keeper, head key keeper, but I’m still a doorman that opens a museum,” says Crea, a devout Catholic. “But I open the doors to the history of art and the history of Christianity—and it’s the biggest and most beautiful history that exists in the world.” His workday begins around 5 a.m. in a secure bunker that holds 2,797 keys. Crea and his team of 10 clavigeri navigate some 4.3 miles of passageways through the museums to reach 300 doors—many of them…

How can I curb this constant hunger? Q: I started waking up earlier to exercise instead of doing it in the afternoon, but now my weight loss has stalled and I always feel hungry. What’s going on? A: Congratulations on taking charge of your health! Exercising any time of day brings benefits, but doing so after you wake is especially good for kick-starting calorie burn. In fact, in an animal study, Scandinavian researchers found that morning workouts increased the activity of genes involved in fat breakdown, helping to boost metabolism and burn fat more effectively than evening exercise, and they say the same benefit would apply to humans. As far as your hunger goes, it’s possible you’re dehydrated—especially if you’re exercising in the morning before eating or drinking. To ensure proper hydration, I…

1 I would like to repaint the front door of my house. My house has beige siding. Which colour options would look best? Julia D., via email S@H Painting the front door is an easy way to update the facade of your home. The front door should have its own colour – don’t paint shutters or the side or garage doors to match. Since your house is a neutral colour, choose a different neutral with an undertone for a subtle, classic colour combo. If you want more drama, almost any blue will look great with warm beige siding. I like Evening Dove 2128-30, with its blue undertone, and Gray Mountain 1462, which has a lavender undertone (all colours in this answer are from Benjamin Moore). SEA CHANGE

Though it’s just a few decades old, this Cape Cod-style beauty fits in perfectly with the century-old shipbuilder’s homes and summer cottages that dot the coastline of Nova Scotia’s South Shore. The owner approached designers Colin Blanchard and Kenneth McRobbie – who run the Halifax store 31 Westgate – wanting to brighten and update her home’s interior. She loved the bones of the house, set on a small hill and overlooking the harbour in Chester, but the interior was a bit formal. “When we first saw the home, it was very traditional, with dark-stained floors and heavy fabrics,” recalls Colin. The designers’ solution: to fill the home with sunshine, a clean palette of natural fabrics, vintage pieces, and midcentury furnishings for a modern edge. Should you shut down your Mac every night?

Should you shut down your Mac every night?

While Windows users often close down their PCs at the end of the day, those with Macs tend to leave them on indefinitely. Many Mac users engage in this behavior because they want to pick up where they left off, but also because experience has shown them that Macs tend to cope well with this kind of behavior—probably because Apple has designed macOS and Macs to be very efficient in terms of energy use and performance. But is this a good idea? There are three options open to every user when they’ve finished using the computer for the day: Leave it on, put it to sleep or turn it off. Want to know which one to choose? Read on. DO I NEED TO SHUT DOWN MY MAC OR MACBOOK? Over time, processes and…

Supercar Decade

Supercar Decade

As we went about putting together this issue, I couldn’t help but to think about a subsect of cars from the ’90s—cars that are more than deserving of their reputations. The past 10 years might very well go down as the peak hypercar era—the Bugatti Veyron, LaFerrari, McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder, Aston Martin Valkyrie—but the ’90s were peak supercar. Sure, ’70s (the Lamborghini Countach) and ’80s (still Countach, plus the Ferrari Testarossa and Porsche 959) supercars were cool, but the high-flying stuff from the ’90s was simply on another level. After what seemed like two decades of general decline, cars suddenly didn’t suck anymore. The Dodge Viper is the first car that comes to mind when I think about ’90s supercars. Before the Viper, it had been forever since Mopar…

YOUNG AND RESTLESS Nate And Audra Conspire Nate arrives at Audra’s GCAC suite for another clandestine meeting, where he admits that he had a chat with Victor about Nate’s future at Newman Enterprises. “Audra assumes that a conversation like that with Victor couldn’t have gone well,” says Zuleyka Silver (Audra). “She hopes this doesn’t mean that Nate is on shaky ground now at Newman. She asks how bad was it.” On the contrary, Nate happily reports that the discussion was very positive. “Audra is surprised to hear that,” Silver admits. “Nate does say that Victor still grilled him about Victoria, but Nate feels he was able to come across as trustworthy and put some of Victor’s concerns at ease. Nate believes that it went well because he was very up front about his…

Elon Musk appointed Linda Yaccarino as chief executive of Twitter, five months after he said he would relinquish the role. Mr Musk took over the company last October. Ms Yaccarino comes from NBC Universal, where she was in charge of advertising. Mr Musk said his new hire will focus on day-to-day operations while he concentrates on product development, as he strives to “transform this platform into X, the everything app”. Act now, before it’s too late The chief executive of OpenAI, the firm behind the ChatGPT chatbot, called for tighter regulation of rapidly developing generative artificial intelligence, such as by forcing disclosure on images that have been generated by AI. Sam Altman told American senators that “if this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong”, pointing to the near-term potential for…

DAYS OF OUR LIVES

1. What was the name of Nicole’s most memorable film during her teen years as porn star Misty Circle? “Locker Room Lolita. How can I forget that one? I have the VHS cover of it. Props made one. It’s a keepsake.” Correct. 2. How did Nicole and Jan “kill” Victor? “They threw a radio in the bathtub. I think it was a memorable scene for the fans, so they bring it up a lot. And it was a big setup — Nicole and Jan were in cahoots, Jan had Shawn locked up in a cage. It was some silly stuff.” Correct. 3. True or false: Nicole plotted to sabotage Chloe’s reconstructive facial surgery by blackmailing a doctor to botch the operation. “Did I blackmail a doctor? I thought I went in myself to botch it. False. I’m…

ROUTE 66 AIN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE. The Mother Road has long been bypassed by the Interstate Highway System, and most of its once-numerous roadside motels, gas stations, and eateries have vanished beneath the blades of bulldozers. Those that remain generally fall into one of two categories: graffiti-slathered skeletons of their former selves that live on in Instagram infamy or Route 66 memorabilia outfits selling tchotchkes and supplies to infrequent passersby. But the road still has a lot of appeal, especially the more desolate stretches that wander far from the interstate through lonely yet beautiful lands that convey a sense of time travel. These are places where you can see the weather advancing across the countryside as you drive down into the valley to meet it. There are few people…

The Lookback Machine: MotorTrend’s 1990s Predictions

The Lookback Machine: MotorTrend’s 1990s Predictions

“The historian,” wrote Frederich Von Schlegel, “is a prophet looking backwards.” We certainly made more than our share of predictions in the ’90s; we were right about some, wrong about others, and downright embarrassed by a few. Here are a half-dozen of our 1990s projections and their eventual outcomes. 1990: Volkswagen Should Bring Back the Beetle In his June 1990 column, MotorTrend editor Jack Nerad recounted a chat with a Volkswagen PR rep who fretted about the company’s sinking market share. Nerad’s suggestion: Bring back the Beetle. “Volkswagen has lost its reputation for low-cost, reliable ‘transportation’ cars to the Japanese and Koreans,” he wrote. The PR man scoffed—surely Nerad didn’t mean the Beetle? “I wasn’t proposing the reintroduction of a several-decades-old model,” Nerad said. “I was suggesting fresh, modern mechanicals under a…

How to prevent a third world war

IN BEIJING THEY have concluded that America will do anything to keep China down. In Washington they are adamant that China is scheming to supplant the United States as the world’s leading power. For a sobering analysis of this growing antagonism—and a plan to prevent it causing a superpower war—visit the 33rd floor of an Art Deco building in midtown Manhattan, the office of Henry Kissinger. On May 27th Mr Kissinger will turn 100. Nobody alive has more experience of international affairs, first as a scholar of 19th-century diplomacy, later as America’s national security adviser and secretary of state, and for the past 46 years as a consultant and emissary to monarchs, presidents and prime ministers. Mr Kissinger is worried. “Both sides have convinced themselves that the other represents a strategic…

Sting: Songs of My Life

He’s made his name performing on the world’s biggest stages, but Sting is no carpool karaoke singer. “You think I sing in the car?” he says, bemused, over a recent Zoom call. Well, doesn’t everyone? “No. I sing onstage,” says the rocker, 71. “I don’t even sing in the shower. I’ve got to save my voice.” Fair enough. That voice has helped Sting sell more than 100 million albums as a member of the new wave group the Police and as a solo artist. Still, the British star (born Gordon Sumner) considers himself a songwriter first and foremost. On May 18 he was recognized for his skills as a scribe when he became a fellow of the Ivors Academy, a prestigious music writers’ association, at a London ceremony. “If you ask…

Yes, Apple will ‘fake’ zoomed photos on the iPhone 15 too–but how far will it go?

You might have seen headlines this week about the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra taking so-called “fake” moon pictures. Ever since the S20 Ultra, Samsung has had a feature called Space Zoom that marries its 10X optical zoom with massive digital zoom to reach a combined 100X zoom. In marketing shots, Samsung has shown its phone taking nearly crystal clear pictures of the moon, and users have done the same on a clear night. But a Redditor has proven that Samsung’s incredible Space Zoom is using a bit of trickery. It turns out that when taking pictures of the moon, Samsung’s AI-based Scene Optimizer does a whole lot of heavy lifting to make it look like the moon was photographed with a high-resolution telescope rather than a smartphone. So when someone takes…

Whether you share your shop with cars and a lawn mower or you have your own dedicated woodworking space, you want to make the most of your time there. I’ve worked in some tight spaces as well as spacious shops, and I have enough tips, tricks and techniques to write a book. Here are just a few of my favorites. PORTABLE DUST CONTROL You can buy box fans with attached filters, like the one shown, or you can simply attach a filter to the back of an old box fan. Either way, having one of these portable dust-control devices on hand lets you keep it close to the dust. I also like to use mine as a downdraft table when I’m sanding! On The Rise: ’90s Collector Cars

On The Rise: ’90s Collector Cars

The ’90s can conjure thoughts of an automotive dark age full of unsatisfying niche vehicles and evolutionary dead ends. It’s the decade that gave us the Suzuki X-90, after all. But it was also studded with gems, some of which have become bona fide collectibles and some that still await a star turn. 1991–1996 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo The Z32 Z marked a triumphant return to sports car greatness, especially in twin-turbo guise. It looked sleek, and it packed 300 hp and 283 lb-ft of torque, wild numbers for the time. Nissan also included HICAS active rear steering for world-beating handling that helped it snap up our 1990 Import Car of the Year award. While the best examples have slipped slightly, an excellent 300ZX turbo is a $40,000 car as of this…

L’intégration est morte ? Vive l’assimilation !

THE ROCK’S JOURNEY TO THE  TOP

After kicking off his career as a professional wrestler in the mid-1990s, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has gone on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest — and most beloved — stars. His films have broken box office records and raked in billions of dollars globally. He has numerous successful side businesses, including his production company, Seven Bucks Productions, his Zoa energy drink and his Teremana Tequila brand. He’s worth an estimated $350 million and is even considering running for the biggest job in the nation — president of the United States. “Dwayne,” says a source, “is on top of the world.” His epic rise to fame was far from easy, though. And the source tells OK! Dwayne is opening up like never before about the trials and tribulations he faced on…

BLINDSIDED by DIVORCE

AFTER five years of playing beloved patriarch John Dutton on the smash-hit series Yellowstone, actor Kevin Costner is leaving the show. The surprising news comes amid rumors of behind-the-scenes tension between the Oscar winner and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, as well as reports that the grueling filming hours got the best of Kevin. “He had to juggle a ridiculously hectic schedule,” says a source, “and had so many demands on his shoulders.” The dramatic decision to bow out was a case of too little, too late for Kevin’s soon-to-be ex-wife, Christine Baumgartner, who blindsided the 68-year-old with divorce papers on May 1. “Kevin doesn’t deny that his work commitments were taking a toll on their relationship,” the source tells Star. “But he’s shocked and heartbroken.” The actor and Christine, 49…

The powerful image, captured ins ide Buckingham Palace shortly after the coronation at Westminster Abbey, shows His Majesty, 74, in full regalia on his throne, with the Prince of Wales, 40, and Prince George, nine, either side of him. He is dressed in his purple velvet and ermine-caped Robe of Estate with the Imperial State Crown on his head, holding the Sovereign’s Orb and Sceptre with Cross, part of the regalia that had featured in the ceremony earlier in the day. DESPITE RELENTLESS CRITICISM OF his 2015 draft, GM Don Sweeney did snag regular contributors Jake DeBrusk (No. 14 overall) and Brandon Carlo (No. 37 overall). And, coincidentally, Sweeney acquired two others from that class by trading Erik Haula for Pavel Zacha (No. 6 overall by New Jersey) and signing A.J. Greer (No. 39 by Colorado). Both forwards have made the Bruins bigger and faster. Recently extended, Zacha may even emerge as a long-term solution at center. The world this week

Politics The fighting in Israel and Gaza ebbed, as international pressure for a ceasefire grew. More than 230 people have been killed, most of them Palestinian. Israel said the toll included 150 militants. The violence spilled into the West Bank, where at least 20 Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli forces. The Israeli army also exchanged fire with militants in Lebanon. Ebrahim Raisi and Ali Larijani, two leading conservative candidates, filed their papers to run in next month’s presidential election in Iran. All 300 candidates will be vetted by the theologians on the Guardian Council. Spain deployed troops in its enclave of Ceuta, on the Moroccan coast, when 8,000 migrants breached border fences. Morocco did little to stop the influx. It is upset with Spain for accepting Brahim Ghali for covid-19 treatment.…

Eight months after his wife Naomi Judd’s death, Larry Strickland can still feel her presence in every corner of their Nashville home of 30 years. “The house is exactly the way she left it,” Strickland, 76, says from their shared office, which is filled with family photos and Judd’s accolades, as he holds back tears. “Her clothes are still in the closet. I took the stuff off her bathroom counter because I couldn’t stand to look at that. But everything else is exactly the same. Every room I go into, there’s memories that are there, which is great—but it can trigger the grief as well.” On April 30, 2022, Judd died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after a long battle with anxiety and severe depression. CORE RETURNS

CORE RETURNS

No longer must those of us who love FromSoftware’s build-your-own-mecha series languish in purgatory, stuck playing the last Armored Core’s merely OK (and now decade-old) multiplayer on modded PlayStation 3s. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is blazing its way onto PC. If you’ve been a dedicated PC player for your whole life and the whole ‘mecha anime’ thing passed you by in the ’90s and ’00s, the hype from fans of FromSoftware probably seems odd. What you need to understand is that there are other games with mechs, but they are not Armored Core. In the same way that Elden Ring is an all-encompassing experience, Armored Core has long striven for that same ideal with giant robots. This sequel is a promise to fans that’s been decades in the making. WAR…

Lord of the Fireflies

Lord of the Fireflies

IN THE DARK of a June evening, standing in the black mud of a New Jersey bog, an hour’s drive from home, Christopher Heckscher was alert to any flicker of light. He is an explorer, though this wilderness lies in one of the most densely populated regions of the United States: the Northeast megalopolis. And now, as pale stars appeared from behind the clouds, he needed one more firefly. Heckscher, a professor at Delaware State University, is an ornithologist who studies thrushes, sparrows and other migrating songbirds. But another fascinating flier captured his attention early on, and he has been publishing papers about fireflies for almost 20 years. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Heckscher was able to focus on his favorite insect close to his home region. He joined with other North…

1,000 MILES TO GO

1,000 MILES TO GO

IT’S NOT CLEAR WHO FIRST DISCOVERED THE GOLD. Even that word “discovered” is a misnomer. The local Tlingit and Tagish tribes were both well aware of its presence along the river decades before Westerners started drawing it from the ground; they’d simply had no use for the stuff. Perhaps it’s better to say it’s not clear who first exploited the gold—who helped inspire some 100,000 prospectors to make the arduous trip to the Yukon Territory in northwest Canada, a migration that became known as the Klondike Gold Rush. Some say it was George Carmack, an enterprising American who had made a career searching for bullion in Canada and Alaska, who first found this lustrous natural resource along the bed of the Klondike River. Others credit Carmack’s brother-in-law, a Tagish man named…

LIGHTNING RODS

LIGHTNING RODS

These two Ford F-150 Lightning pickups are nothing alike. Their worldviews appear to be diametrically opposed. The original seems antisocial—a flagrant corruption of the noble F-150’s puritanical work ethic, a hedonistic implement for transforming petroleum into muscle car noises and pre-Hellcat, tire-shredding burnouts. Oy, the emissions! The modern Lightning EV, by contrast, hugs the planet by swiftly and silently performing tasks without fouling its immediate environs with even a molecule of CO2 while selflessly offering to power homes, businesses, and disaster locations with its abundant onboard energy. Kumbaya, my truck, kumbaya. Then again, viewed through a historical lens, they’re eerily similar. Each truck was conceived to pursue a novel trend in the wider light-duty truck market—the high-performance “personal-use” pickup of the 1990s and the e-truck of today. Neither pioneered its segment—the…

PUTIN’S ENDGAME

PUTIN’S ENDGAME

AS THE BATTLE OF WILLS AND MIGHT BETWEEN Russia and the West over the fate of Ukraine unfolds, there is one key fact to bear in mind: Vladimir Putin has never lost a war. During past conflicts in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria and Crimea over his two decades in power, Putin succeeded by giving his armed forces clear, achievable military objectives that would allow him to declare victory, credibly, in the eyes of the Russian people and a wary, watching world. His latest initiative in Ukraine is unlikely to be any different. Despite months of military buildup along Ukraine’s borders and repeated warnings from the Biden administration that an incursion could happen at any time, the February 24 predawn bombing campaign that kicked off Europe’s first land war in decades seemed to…

Declining software quality is just one of the many issues bugging Apple users

I love speaking at user group meetings. There aren’t as many Apple user groups out there as there used to be, and these days the meetings are mostly over Zoom, but as someone who mostly speaks with developers, PR people, and media types, it’s refreshing to speak to people who are much more purely enthusiastic about Apple and its platforms. User groups also tend to do a good job of exposing the concerns and pain points of Apple customers who aren’t doing this for a living. It’s a great perspective shift. Last month, I spoke to a group that made it pretty clear what Apple is doing that is making them unhappy. The particular complaints that floated to the top were, I think, instructive about where Apple needs to make changes…

RUSTIC & ROMANTIC

Though it is just 16 feet wide and 24 feet long, this rural retreat is big on escape-to-the-country charm. “My entire family built it from scratch using salvaged, 150-year-old barnboards and spruce beams,” says the Montreal-based homeowner. The beams’ length dictated the size and shape of the space, which was constructed post-and-beam style, remarkably without the use of any machinery or nails. “My uncle is an engineer and played a key role in building the house, which is like this incredible natural sculpture,” she says. The furnishings, mostly thrifted and antique, layer in a welcoming, lived-in look, and it’s no wonder the owner’s two grown children spend as much time here with her as they can. She says, “Inside and out, it makes us feel calm and relaxed, and worlds…

The 15-inch MacBook Air will be the perfect mix of portability, price, and performance

Rumors picked up again recently that a new 15-inch MacBook Air will be Apple’s next major Mac release, possibly at the Worldwide Developers conference, according to Mark Gurman’s latest report. But whether we get it before, during, or after WWDC, this much is true: It will instantly become Apple’s perfect laptop. That may seem like a stretch, but hear me out. Assuming the rumors and our own assumptions are true, the 15-inch MacBook Air will be the ideal laptop for nearly every user, with its combination of size, processing power, and value. The MacBook Air is already Apple’s most popular laptop, and a 15-inch model would be the jewel of the lineup. Here’s why. THE RIGHT SIZE Apple offers MacBooks in four different sizes: 13.3 inches (13-inch MacBook Pro), 13.6 inches (M2 MacBook…

Where I live, the police drive some heavy-duty machinery. There’s the odd Ford Taurus hanging in there, but mainly it’s Chevy Tahoes, Dodge Durangos, and Ford Explorers, with a healthy smattering of V-8 Dodge Chargers. One day, while I was day-dreaming about municipal budgets (as I am wont to do), I wondered: Would cops drive something smaller and more efficient if they got to share in the savings from a lower purchase price? And if so, what would that number need to be? If I were a cop, I’d think $1000 could persuade me to drive an Escape patrol car. But I am not a cop—I had to turn in my badge because I play by nobody’s rules but my own—so I asked some police to join me in this…

Anna Nicole Smith: The Icon No One Truly Knew

Anna Nicole Smith climbed into her son’s coffin and began clinging to his body. As with so many moments in her life, the flashes of a camera trailed her. It was September 2006. Daniel, 20, had died of an accidental overdose three days after Smith gave birth to her daughter Dannielynn. At the service Smith stood with her boyfriend and attorney, Howard K. Stern, and best friends Pol’ Atteu and Patrik Simpson. “She just couldn’t let him go,” Atteu, 57, remembers. “Daniel was who kept Anna Nicole grounded, and now he was gone.” Remembers Simpson, 54: “Even in her son’s death there was nothing private for her. Everything was a public spectacle.” It was the beginning of the end. Smith died five months later, also from an accidental overdose, at age…

Plus, green always looks chic with both light and dark woods. This colour will take your kitchen through the years without going out of style. MAKING WAVES Infuse year-round nautical style into your kitchen decor by opting for very soft washed blue-grey or classic navy cabinetry. Living With Stiff-Person Syndrome: ‘It Felt Like My Bones Were All Breaking’

‘It’s a really scary disease. I’ve had to learn ways to calm myself down’—AYLI DUNK For months, dread would wash over Ayli Dunk whenever she felther body begin to stiffen and cramp, knowing there was no way to stop what was coming; she could only cry. “She knew it was about to hurt,” says her mother, Lindsey Sutherland. “Her body would contort in ways it should not. The top of her body twists one way and her bottom another. Her feet curl in. And she would bawl because of how painful it is.” Unable to prevent her teen’s torment, Sutherland would reassure her: “Babe, it’s going to be okay.” But Sutherland wasn’t sure those words were true until Dunk finally received a diagnosis last August: Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS), caused by brain swelling…

RELENTLESS PERFECTION

A large swath of American drivers today have always known Lexus as an established power player. But when Lexus unveiled its first car, the LS, at the Detroit auto show in January 1989, America had a lot to learn about Toyota’s upstart luxury brand. Toyota’s idea? To build cars as luxurious and gratifying as the Germans while delivering what those cars didn’t: commuter-car reliability. That brief generated the 1990 LS 400 sedan, which was launched alongside a business plan to undercut the traditional brands’ prices while giving customers a highly attentive dealership experience. It worked. The cars and eventual SUVs lived up to the hype, and the dealers’ free breakfasts and loungelike waiting rooms became benchmarks. By the dawn of the millennium, Lexus managed to build itself a chair and pull…

As the 20th century’s final decade began, Tom Cruise felt the need for speed in a Chevy Lumina, the coolest new music came from Seattle, and NikeTown was the next big thing in retail therapy. The Berlin Wall had fallen, and with it the Soviet Union began its collapse. The Cold War was over. The good guys won. This was, declared political scientist Francis Fukuyama, the end of history. Except it wasn’t. The 1990s would see the usual catalog of war and misery and political intrigue that has plagued humanity since the beginning. It would also see the invention of a technology that would reshape global culture—the world wide web. And it would be the decade that remade the auto industry. For carmakers, the ’90s delivered a decade of unprecedented acquisitions, mergers,…

Author Jancee Dunn Takes On Menopause: ‘It’s Not All Doom and Gloom’

Jancee Dunn was a 45-year-old mom of a toddler when she first began experiencing symptoms of perimenopause—a racing heartbeat, “crawlingly itchy” dry skin, night sweats so severe she was convinced she’d peed the bed. But despite her years of experience as a health reporter, the bestselling author—along with her doctors—attributed it all to stress. When she missed a few periods, she assumed she was pregnant. “I had it in my head that menopause was for older ladies,” she says, “and I was busy going to Mommy and Me classes with my young child.” Most women reach menopause—confirmed when 12 months have elapsed without a period—between the ages of 40 and 58, but symptoms can begin years earlier. “It’s embarrassing to think of now, but I was so clueless,” says Dunn, now…

ICE ICE beauty

What is cryotherapy? The term “cryotherapy” refers to treatments using extremely cold temperatures to cool the body’s tissue for therapeutic purposes. The word may invoke images of large cryogenic chambers in clinics or athletes being submerged in large tubs of ice, but there are many ways you can use cryotherapy on a smaller scale from the comfort of your home. This type of cold therapy has been used for thousands of years across many different cultures for its benefits—there are a variety of reasons to try cold therapy. “The cold helps reduce inflammation and calm the skin, while constricting blood vessels,” says Vee Mistry, celebrity esthetician, skin-care specialist and founder of SKINBYVEE, her private facial studio based in Toronto. Mistry believes that cryotherapy is gaining popularity as life returns to normal following…

FAN ENGAGEMENT DAYS’s Leann Hunley (Anna) and Thaao Penghlis (Tony) recently traveled to the East Coast, where they were able to interact with some loyal viewers at a fan event. “The feedback was beyond beautiful,” Hunley enthuses. “These fans are so invested in the show and in the people they have watched for years. I have been here for 41 and they are so kind and loving. They brought me things that I have not seen in 40 years and pictures. They were just delightful.” Penghlis echoes the sentiment, adding, “We offer them something in one area of their life and I think we have to appreciate it. At the same time, it keeps our show alive.” The actors also appreciate hearing what the fans think of the goings-on in Salem.…

How to set up a Mac to run either macOS Mojave or macOS Big Sur

How to set up a Mac to run either macOS Mojave or macOS Big Sur

Big Sur is a major upgrade to macOS, and some people are ready for it. However, if you’ve been running Mojave or an earlier version of macOS to keep 32-bit applications running, you may still be holding back. If you’re otherwise ready to move forward, you have a few options for keeping your Mojave installation active. In each case, I’d recommend starting by making a full disk image backup of your current macOS setup with Disk Utility, SuperDuper!, or Carbon Copy Cloner. In case something goes wrong, you can revert to it or restore from it. Your easiest path is to buy or use a sufficiently large external drive and clone to it directly from your current Mac. This lets you even boot from it in a pinch, so you don’t have a…

COLOR THEORY

COLOR THEORY

No other version of the VW Golf is more emblematic of 1990s style and hues than the Harlequin, a car with a backstory as wild as its quad-color paint job. Diehard VW fans and retro car enthusiasts are familiar with the Harlequin, but the wacky hatchback only recently has enjoyed renewed appreciation. Volkswagen originated the idea for a multicolored car in a 1964 print advertisement. The ad showed off the brand’s year-to-year interchangeable parts, represented by a Beetle with mismatching body panels and fenders. The vision was actualized as a production car in the form of the Europe-only 1995 Mk3 Polo Harlequin hatchback, which wore mishmashed body panels painted Tornado Red, Chagall Blue, Ginster Yellow, and Pistachio Green. Intended as a small batch of 20 cars, consumers expressed enthusiasm for the…

Turkey’s presidential election will head to a run-off on May 28th, after Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the incumbent, fell just shy of 50% in the first round of voting. Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the candidate of an opposition alliance of six parties, got 45%. Mr Kilicdaroglu may now struggle to unseat Turkey’s strongman, who has presided over rampant inflation. In a bad night for the opposition Mr Erdogan’s Justice and Development (AK) party retained a comfortable majority in parliament. On a wing and a prayer Volodymyr Zelensky paid brief visits to Britain, France, Germany and Italy to drum up support for a “jets coalition”. France said it would train Ukrainian pilots to use combat aircraft. Germany promised €2.7bn ($2.9bn) in military aid and is to build a tank-repair factory in Ukraine. Britain pledged more air-defence…

Old, New & Blue

Old, New & Blue

When designer and shop owner MK Quinlan set out to redo her family’s kitchen, the trick was blending her love of color and antiques with elements that fit the style of a 1959 midcentury rambler in Birmingham, AL. Knowing she’d furnish adjacent rooms with antique rugs and so-called brown furniture, she sought a fresh and crisp Scandi-leaning foundation to not make the house too period or old feeling. MK also believes anything built in should support the house’s architecture. “It felt right that everything added in a permanent way would be in sync with its era,” MK says, citing the cabinet style and even the stainless-steel backsplash. “The workaday nature of it is utilitarian; it just makes sense for the house.” Slab-front cabinets, stacked appliances, and a table instead of…

up her Alley

Alley Mills, who is still recurring on B&B, was as surprised as anyone when she got the call from GH to play the soap’s favorite female psycho, Heather Webber, a role previously portrayed by Robin Mattson, who was unavailable at the time. “I have a friend who is a Broadway actor and he lives in a cul-de-sac in the Catskills, as does the head writer of GENERAL HOSPITAL,” recounts Mills as to how the opportunity came about. “One night over a martini, my friend called me and he said, ‘Would you ever think of doing GENERAL HOSPITAL?’ This was months and months ago. ‘We were just talking and yours and Orson’s name came up and he goes, ‘I love Pam! Would she ever do GH?’ That was pretty soon after…

Business

America’s Justice Department charged Sam Bankman-Fried with fraud, money-laundering and violating campaign-finance laws in relation to the collapse of FTX, a crypto exchange. He was arrested in the Bahamas, where FTX is based. The department said that FTX’s “phenomenal downfall” was not a case of mismanagement, but instead one “of intentional fraud, plain and simple”. It alleges that Mr Bankman-Fried misappropriated FTX’s money for personal use, to repay debts owed by his hedge fund, Alameda, and to give millions to political candidates. It is a spectacular fall from grace for a man who had been lauded for his “effective altruism”. Meanwhile the pressure increased on Binance, a rival crypto exchange to FTX, following a run of withdrawals from its business. Nansen, a blockchain analytics firm, said that Binance had seen net…

“Nothing holds me back now!”

How can I be this tired? Sally K. Norton wondered, unable to stand for the receiving line at her own wedding. “I was doing the best I could sitting on a stool, but my limitations were on full display that day,” she recalls. “No dancing. Standing for my vows was all my sore joints could manage. My mother even told the groom he’d gotten ‘defective goods.’ Little did I know my symptoms would outlast my marriage. Barely living “Having my tonsils removed as a kid taught me something: I never wanted to be sick again—it meant having no fun. So I focused on eating healthy. I even grew my own vegetables. But over the years, I developed debilitating pain in my feet and back, needing 3,600 mg. of Rx pain medications daily.…

Kate Winslet: ‘I Feel Super Grounded in Myself’

After nearly three decades of screen stardom, Kate Winslet has reached the point where she’s found the perfect balance between work and family. “I feel really grateful getting to choose when I can [take time] off, so I don’t feel I’m missing out on life or key moments in my children’s lives,” says the Oscar-winning actress, 47, who’s mom to sons Bear, 9, and Joe, 19, and daughter Mia, 22. “I feel super grounded in myself, strong and solid.” Her kids encouraged Winslet, who has been married to businessman Edward Abel Smith for 10 years, to take on her latest film, Avatar: The Way of Water, a sequel to the 2009 blockbuster Avatar. The movie reunites her with Titanic director James Cameron, 25 years after the epic romance made her a…

MOURNING GLORY Y&R fans voiced their disbelief on social media that no one recognized Phyllis in disguise at her own funeral, but her portrayer, Michelle Stafford, is here to report that her character flying under the radar wasn’t that farfetched. “It’s so funny because so many people were like, ‘Oh my God! Nobody recognized her?’” the actress iterates. “But honestly, I was on the set wearing that wig and those glasses for a good 45 minutes, and no one recognized me. Everyone just walked by and ignored me. And when I was walking to the set, Josh [Morrow, Nick] walked right past me, so I went, ‘Hi’, and he just went, ‘Hi’ and kept on walking! He didn’t bat an eye and I was really stunned. I thought, ‘Oh, wow, this…

BLASTS FROM THE PAST

For as long as humans have been peering upward into the speckled black of night, the sky has exhibited remarkable stability. The seemingly countless stars in our Milky Way obediently hold their places within a moving tapestry that changes only slightly, even over spans of tens of thousands of years or more. Despite minor idiosyncrasies, the Moon and the five naked-eye planets predictably abide by their assigned celestial pathways. However, roughly every few centuries or so, we get a jolt to this cosmic consistency. It comes from what is perhaps the most unpredictable naked-eye manifestation in our galaxy: the appearance of a supernova, the explosive self-destruction of a star. Rising from obscurity, a blaze graces our skies for several months to a few years before slowly fading away into new and…

To paraphrase Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart on obscenity, “We know it when we see it.” The more familiar a story is to us, the more likely we are to buy it. GH’s Laura battling Victor Cassadine in Greenland for a pathogen that could kill 80 percent of the population would have been an eye-roller if it wasn’t a perfect callback to 40 years ago, when Luke did the same thing by typing the words ICE PRINCESS into a computer to save the world. Victor (after Laura grabbed the pathogen): “You drop it, you die.” Laura: “So do you. That might be worth it.” A battle followed, while back home, the OGs tried to stop the WSB from bombing Greenland to neutralize…

VPI Avenger Direct

VPI Avenger Direct

Founded in 1978, VPI Industries appears to be one of the most successful turntable manufacturers in the world—certainly in the US. The New Jersey–based company sells turntables, tonearms, cartridges, record clamps, plinths, record cleaning machines, and a phono preamp. But that’s not all. The company offers VPI-branded pillows, candles, mugs, stickers, T-shirts, and a tell-all company history, 40 Years on the Record. And talk about turntables! From the entry-level $1499 Cliffwood to the top-of-the-line $104,000 Vanquish (found under the website’s “VPI Luxury” page, accompanied by the adage, “Settle for Nothing but Extravagant”), VPI is clearly and rightfully proud of its analog achievements. Like many successful small businesses, VPI is a family affair. Cofounder and designer/engineer Harry Weisfeld designed the tables that established the company’s reputation. Sheila, Harry’s late wife and VPI cofounder,…
